What is an account manager at an insurance agency?
A plain-English definition for wholesale insurance producers, and for the retail producers they work with.
An account manager at an insurance agency is the person who services a book of clients day to day: gathering renewal information, preparing submissions, handling endorsements and certificates, and answering client questions. Account managers usually work alongside producers, who focus on bringing in new business. Titles vary by agency, and some account managers also handle smaller accounts on their own.
How it works.
A typical commercial lines account manager prepares renewal submissions, markets accounts to insurers and wholesalers, reviews quotes and policies, processes changes and keeps client records. The work overlaps with servicing duties the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists for insurance agents, such as handling renewals, helping with claims and maintaining records.
Licensing requirements for agency staff vary by state and by the tasks they perform, and many account managers hold a producer license.
Why it matters to wholesale producers.
At many retail agencies, the account manager is the person who actually sends the submission to a wholesaler. Wholesale producers who know the account managers on the books that fit their appetite, not only the producers, often see submissions sooner.
For retail producers: giving your account managers a short list of trusted wholesalers by line makes renewals and hard-to-place accounts faster.
